__Concept:__

If pipe is rigid, then pressure wave will travel in the medium at a velocity C equal to the velocity of sound which is given by:

\({\rm{C}} = \sqrt {\frac{{\rm{K}}}{{\rm{\rho }}}} \)

Where, K = bulk modulus of fluid in MPa and ρ = density of fluid in kg/m^{3}.

Hence, the velocity of pressure wave is proportional to 1/√ρ

__Important Point:__

Pressure waves are generated due to the water hammer action which is caused due to sudden closure of valve.

Due to this the momentum of water gets destroyed and hence a pressure wave is generated which will travel in opposite direction.
